The Learning Resource Server (LRS) is a suite of servers, including Web, Gopher, and FTP servers, that distribute and mediate electronic learning resources created for and by precollege teachers and students, pre-service teachers, education faculty members, and educational researchers. The Teaching TeleApprenticeships Research Project has created and maintained the LRS.

Too often electronic networks are regarded solely as ways to quickly access or superficially "surf" for information. We feel, however, these newly available network and computer technologies provide innovative ways to view learning, ways that transcend rote memorization of "facts" and passive, uncritical thinking.

Electronic networks, especially the World-Wide Web, allow people to create knowledge instead of just consuming it, knowledge which can be "served" to the world. This is true for teachers and students at all levels. Creating information and publishing it electronically on the Web is called "serving". The LRS aims to help students and teachers move toward activities that involve actively learning, creating, and "serving" information to the world.

The LRS has links to many ways in which technology, especially electronic networks, can be integrated into teacher education. These ways provide motivating contexts for learning and powerful new resources for teacher education. But at the same time, teacher education students and faculty, through these interactions, can provide valuable resources for education and the society more broadly.
