Missionary Work
Being
an educator in the suburban Chicago area affords me some flexibility of
schedule in the summer months and the opportunity to offer some assistance
to our church. I have now been able to volunteer my time twice to
help the growth of the Eastern Orthodox communities in Hong Kong and throughout
Southeast Asia.
I was asked
by Metropolitan Nikitas Lulias to help with their efforts in the Far East
in the summer of 1997. I spent seven weeks that summer helping set-up
and organize the Metropolitanated offices and working with children of
the community.
This past
summer (1999) I was again asked to help out in this region of the world.
I spent a month in Hong Kong assisting in the offices, handling communications,
and writing grant applications. I also spent 8 days on Masbate, a
small island in the southern Philippines. There, I evaluated and
worked with a kindergarten program, established a Sunday School program,
and gave a series of lectures to the community. This proved to be
a very enlightening and humbling experience.
