Overview of 490i Educational Links
Centennial H.S. Champaign Unit # 4 Schools -- Teacher
Web Resources
History Channel (http://www.historychannel.com/home/index.html) A great resource for anyone interested in history at a general interest level. It has interactive elements, promos for upcoming televison features, and lots general interest background. The site uses the best of interactive elements judiciously to advance its topic thoughtfully.
National Geographic (http://www.nationalgeographic.com/) A great site for the sheer amount of quality information produced with same high quality that the magazine has had for over 100 years. Again, great use of streaming media to enhance, not detract, from the site's mission -- all things geographic. top
ThinkQuest (http://www.thinkquest.org/index.html) This could well be my favorite site on the web. Its generated largely by student contestants and their work is nothing short of amazing. Take some time to peruse the links to recent winners and you will see what I mean. top
Cisco Networking Academy (http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/779/edu/academy/overview/curriculum/demo.html) I admit to having a soft spot for this page as it links to a demo of the curriculum I teach. Cisco isn't just talking about online learning, they are doing it. Yet, they also understand the power of teacher led discussions and mentoring. A great program. top
The National Holocaust Museum (http://www.ushmm.org/museum/) The art of story telling is a tricky one in any medium. The challenge this site rises to is to convey the power and the emotional impact of one humanity's saddest chapters. It integrates web media with superb restraint letting the words of victims' stories and the images recorded tell the story. top
Searching for China WebQuest (http://www.kn.pacbell.com/wired/China/ChinaQuest.html) I teach high school and I had always viewed webquests as an activity geared for elementary and middle school students. Boy, this site proved me wrong! With a powerful question, "What actions should the U.S. take in its actions towards China?", and, the sites difinitions of U.S constituencies involved in fromulating this policy, this webquest will help generate the kind of critical thinking any high school social studies teacher would like to see in his or her classroom. top
Six Paths to China (http://www.kn.pacbell.com/wired/China/index.html) The parent site to the WebQuest above, this site would be useful to anyone looking for resources on China. top
The Underground Railroad (http://exchange.co-nect.net/Teleprojects/project/Railroad/) A tremendous site that supplements a subtopic of the antebellum history that is often glossed over in the relentless march to cover American History in the classroom. It has first person accounts, many clevery integrated modern resources, and even journal writing. A first class site! top
The Population Clock (http://www.census.gov/main/www/popclock.html) Ok, smarty pants, how many people are in the United Sates? The world? This site will tell you, and give you links to how they figured it. top
Bob Dylan (http://www.bobdylan.com/)
The curse of the "educational site" Why is it we think of only sites
that have to do with curriculum as being educational? The web is one vast educational
resource. If yor looking for inforamtion about America's greatest living poet
and a great entertainer, this is the site to go to. It has all of his songs,
links to the world of "His Bobness" and much more. Education comes
in a myriad of forms, let's not let the "mongrel dogs who teach" put
a straight jacket on it. top
