Introduction
As educators are called upon to integrate an increasing amount of technology into their curriculums, there may be an increasing number of instances in which educators face ethical dilemmas as a result. In this document, we have discussed the place of technology in an educational setting, the need for a code of ethics regarding the use of technology in education, and outlined several ethical guidelines we feel educators should consider when using these tools in the classroom. The authors of this piece developed our guidelines within four broad areas of concern for educators using technology: professional responsibility, appropriate use, equity/access/social justice, and privacy and confidentiality. Within these four areas, we have used three guiding ethical principles to organize our guidelines:
(1) use technology to benefit, rather
than harm;
(2) respect others' rights;
(3) use technology resources for the greatest good.
We feel that educators should keep these three principles in
mind as they encounter new dilemmas that new technology is sure to bring.
