Web Editing and FTP

Here's how to edit your web files from home or from some place off-campus, transfering the files with an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) application.

1. Connect to the Internet. If you're using a modem, connect to your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or whatever other way you connect.
   

2. Start up your FTP application (ie. for Macs, Fetch; for Win, WS_FTP, or CuteFTP, or whatever).
3. Transfer the files from the LRS server to your local disk.
   
4. Disconnect from the Internet.

   If you already have the latest versions of your files on your local computer, you can skip these first four steps.

5. Edit/modify/create your web (HTML) files, using either a commercial web editor (Claris HomePage, Microsoft FrontPage, PageMill, etc.), a free editor (Netscape Composer), or even Microsoft Word (if you use Word, be sure you "Save As" HTML).
   

6. Verify that what you've created is what you want, by viewing the modified or created web files with your web browser (Netscape or Internet Explorer). You can "open locally" a file that is on your own computer.
7. When you're done and happy with what you've created, re-establish your connection to the Internet.
8. Use your FTP application to transfer the modified/created files back to the server.
