Springfield School District 186 in Springfield, Illinois, consists of three high school, four middle schools, and twenty-five elementary schools.  Due to the current redistricting (from the political and financial climate) the various quadrants are being re-aligned.

Fairview Elementary School was built in 1954 and is a brick one-story building.  Fairview Elementary School is part of the District 186 WAN (wide area network).  Fairview School is served by Ethernet and is connected to the WAN backbone with fiber optics.  The District WAN has connectivity to the Internet on a T1 line that is provided by ISBE.  District 186 runs its own DNS (domain name system ).  Fairview does not have any in building servers.  The District webserver and mailserver are located at Lincoln School (basically the technology center of District 186) and at one time the only place with access to that T1 line.  Since most of the technology started at Lincoln School, that is where the technology center is located.

Fairview Elementary School has sixteen classrooms and 33 classroom computers at this time.  Due to space problems, there is no computer lab.  Computers were distributed among the classrooms and teachers due to need and use.  Each classroom is now networked by Ethernet.  Each of our classrooms has at least one computer and a TV/VCR.

       In my classroom there is:

Both LC 580's are on the Internet.  Due to staff changes, I am going to acquire a Mac 5200 and the flex cam in the fall, and pass along one LC580 to another classroom.

                    What Teachers Need to Know

At Fairview School, the network closet is currently located in the teacher's workroom against the NE wall.  This area is open and currently used for storing old and broken  technology equipment.
