Category 5 CableCATEGORY 5 CABLEis a type of cable used to connect computers and computer devices to each other. It is a standard type of cable that that has the capability to transmit 10 100-bits of information (or a gigabit). It is much faster than Category Three Cable, the previous standard. by Melissa Creech CATEGORY 5 CABLE Category 5 describes network cabling that consists of four twisted pairs of copper wire terminated by RJ45 connectors. Cat-5 cabling supports frequencies up to 100 MHz and speeds up to 100 Mbps. It can be used for ATM, token ring, 1000Base-T, 100Base-T, and 10Base-T networking. Computers hooked up to LANs today are usually connected using Cat-5 cables, so if your on a LAN, most likely the cable running out of the back of your PC is Category 3 if the wiring is older than 8 years, but less than 14 years and Category 5 if it has been less than 8 years since your building was last wired. Cat-5 is based on the EIA/TIA 568 Commercial Building Telecommunications Wiring Standard developed by the Electronics Industries Association as requested by the Computer Communications Industry Association in 1985.
