PPTP Connection

PPTP Connection- Point to Point Tunneling Protocol. This new technology was developed by Microsoft, US Robotics and others to enable VPN's to work securely over the internet without exposing their communications to intercept. This is only available to Windows NT and linux so it is irrevelent to the Springfield School District which uses the Mac platform exclusively.

Source:

Short for Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol, a new technology for creating Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) , developed jointly by Microsoft Corporation, U.S. Robotics, and several remote access vendor companies, known collectively as the PPTP Forum. A VPN is a private network of computers that uses the public Internet to connect some nodes. Because the Internet is essentially an open network, the Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) is used to ensure that messages transmitted from one VPN node to another are secure. With PPTP, users can dial in to their corporate network via the Internet. Although PPTP has been submitted to the IETF for standardization, it is currently available only on networks served by a Windows NT 4.0 server and Linux.

Necessary? Yes
This is a necessary term to be familiar with because security is always going to be a concern.  This is true not only in the educational field, but in personal use of the Internet, also.

PPTP: PPTP is short for Point to Point Tunneling Protocol, a new technology for creating Virtual Private Networks (see below). This method for linking data between devices encapsulates other protocols for transmission over the Internet. Because its encryption capabilities, PPTPs are used to create private networks within the public Internet. Remote users can access their corporate networks via any Internet
Service Provider that supports PPTP on its servers. This format was developed jointly by Microsoft Corporation, U. S. Robotics and several remote access vendor companies known collectively as the PPTP Forum. PPTP is used to ensure that messages transmitted from one Virtual Private Network to another are secure. Communication remains private as opposed to the vulnerable nature of transmissions via the Internet.

Although PPTP has been submitted to the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) for standardization, it is currently only available on networks served by Window NT 4.0 and Linux. To download information on the technical specifications of PPTP, see this site by 3 Com Corporation.
