SMTPSMTPSimple Mail Transfer Protocol. The protocol or language used to send email over the Internet.by Tammy Barcalow SMTP - Simple Mail Transfer Protocol is a TCP/IP protocol used in sending and receiving email. Usually users use SMTP for sending email, and use either POP3 or IMAP for receiving messages (see above for POP3 and IMAP). Most mail programs allow users to specify a SMTP server and a POP server. The SMTP is usually assigned port 25 over the TCP. by Michael Marassa
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol- This is the "language" used to send emails. It uses the TCP/IP (transmission control protocol /internet protocol) to define the format for sending mail across the internet. The SMTP servers send the messages throughout the internet to a mail server such as POP3 (see POP3). by Liz Sanford SMTP While POP3 allows you to retrieve email from the district server, SMTP (short for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol), is the protocol used to deliver mail from your computer to the server and from the server to other servers. This is why you need to configure both your POP3 and SMTP when you set up the program you use to email.
