Background:
During the last school year, we gave intensive training
to one webmaster from each building and a shorter one-day training to 80
classroom teachers. Each webmaster runs their school web site and
each individual teacher maintains their own classroom site. Next year,
we would like to train an additional 80 classroom teachers while still
advancing those who had the training the previous year. However,
because of limits on release time and staff development resources, we will
need to look for alternative staff development methods that will enable
us to handle this task.
Proposal:
Web-based training
Develop a just-in-time web-based model for staff development
related to web page production. Beginners and advanced users could
access resources via a web site.
Final Product
The final product will consist of three resources that
will enable self-training and self-trouble shooting in a just-in-time manner.
Print Manuals (This will likely be a Word or PageMaker
document that will be printed in a manual that each teacher can take back
to their classroom. The print manual will contain mostly step by step directions
for completing various web development skills)
Web Site (Basically a copy of the print manual will
be placed on the Intranet server, but will also contain an interactive
table of contents, search engine, and links to the training videos)
Digital Videos (Mpeg 2 quality videos will be stored
on an Intranet video server. Teachers will be able to access these
videos from their teacher workstation in their room through the Intranet
web site. Each video will cover a short topic in a 3-5 minute time
frame.)
Action Plan
1) Survey the webmasters and classroom teachers to identify
training needs
2) Compile a final list of training needs and organize
the needs into content areas that apply to
3) Identify resources that can be used for the training
4) Generate the print version in either Word97 or PageMaker
5) Translate into HTML and PDF formats for the web site.
6) Create the video clips that support sections of the
print manual and web site.

Concerns
* I am still debating what format of video I will use
for the project. If I stick with high quality video, I must store
it on the Intranet. However, I could decrease the quality of the
video to enable it to be placed on the Internet. Unfortunately, it will
be much more time consuming to produce for the Internet.
* I am a little worried about getting the print version
done by July 15th. I think its a realistic timeline, but if something
goes wrong it will push the rest of the timeline behind.
