Assignment 3c: Lesson Plan
C & I 335     Summer 1998

Brian Abeling
Pekin District 108
Pekin, Illinois

Background:
Our district started the School Webmasters program about a year and a half ago to train one individual per building to maintain their schools web site.  As part of that training they learned how to produce web pages and graphics.  However, learning to develop their sites for the disabled was not part of the training.

Objectives:
At the end of this training session, each school webmaster will:
1) Learn how to use Bobby to analyze the structure of their web pages
2) Understand why it is important to structure your web pages for the disabled.

To accomplish objective number one, we will use the Bobby web site.  However, I believe that using Bobby won't give our webmasters a full understanding of why these types of changes need be done.  To accomplish objective number two, we will use the Zydacron Video Conferencing system to conference with an organization and/or person who can provide us a 'real life' story of what its like to surf the web with disabilities.

Materials:

  • Each webmaster will need to bring their laptop (which is where they store their
  • Docking stations that will allow them to connect their laptops to the netowrk.
  • On-WAN video conferencing system

Time
This lesson will take approximately 2 hours.

Preparations that need to be done before the training:
I will need to make contact with an organization or individual who can video conference with us for a few minutes on the day of the training.  I will supply them with the URLs for at least two of our current school web sites so that they can take a look at our sites prior to the training.

Procedure:
1) Introduce the webmasters to the Bobby web site.  Have them analyze their current school homepage in Bobby 2.0
2) Share their analysis with the other webmasters and discuss strategies for making corrections.
3) Spend about 45 minutes to an hour making modifications to their page and then reload them to the server.
4) Then run Bobby 2.0 again to compare with the previous results.
5) Using the Zydacron system, video conference with an individual and/or organization that can provide us with the following:

  • Give us a review of what it was like for them as they navigated through our school web sites.
  • Give us a review of what it's like to navigate through other web sites
  • Provide us with any additional tips on how to minimize the obstacles that our web pages have for those who are disabled.
