I. To Facilitate Collaborative Projects

Personal Interests

Why are you interested in this course?
While I am not a network administrator at this time, I am very interested in  complex and advancing technologies.
What do you hope to learn?
I hope to learn more about advanced technologies and how they relate to education at all levels.
How would you like to make use of the work you do for this course?
I rarely have time to read and research new technologies and bleeding edge innovations. I hope this course drives me to keep up with technology trends as they relate to education.

Troubleshooting

What kinds of technical troubleshooting are you called upon to do in your job?
Currently, very little. However in the past, and probably in the future, I was responsible for hardware, software and network troubleshooting. This ranged from jammed printers to loss of communication between CSUs and routers in my district. It also included pulling wire, making patch cables and punching down connections.
Do you need to keep individual computers or networks up and running in a classroom, a lab, a school, or a district?
All of the above.
What, if anything, do you wish you knew how to do better in the area of troubleshooting?
I wish I better understood how the Windows operating system worked, so when software errors occurred I could at least have some frame of reference from which to start.
How do you think Ed Psy 490-I could help you learn about those things?
I don't know the answer to that at this time.

Streaming Media

Do you have access to a video camera?  If so, is it digital (MiniDV, Digital8), analog (VHS, Hi8), or web cam (computer peripheral, no tape used)? Have you ever used it to record audio/video?
No
Have you ever produced streaming video before?
If so, what format? (e.g. RealVideo, QuickTime, Windows Media, Streaming PowerPoint, etc.)
What software did you use to encode/edit the video? (e.g. RealProducer, QuickTime Pro, etc.)
No
Have you ever copied or captured video from a camcorder, VCR or other external video source to a computer?
No
Have you ever created a screen movie (captured events and images on the computer screen and converted to video format)?
If so, did you include an audio track with the movie (e.g. narration, music, etc.)
What software did you use? (e.g. SnagIt, Windows Media Encoder, etc.)
No
Do you already have a video that you would like to stream on the Internet?
If so, is it on tape, or on the computer?
If not, would you prefer to have a video (raw material) provided for you to work with,
or would you make your own with a video camera?
If I had a video camera, I would love to make my own. But since I don't I could either find a source or would use what is provided.
Is this an area you would like to learn more about? If so, how do you think it might be useful for you?
I would like to learn more about streaming video because I think it will change the face of online learning. Streaming video will certainly impact the Illinois Virtual High School.
Would you like to make use of these kinds of technologies in your 490-I course project? If so, how?
I am not sure yet.

Advanced Client-Side Browser Functionality

Do you have any experience with writing computer code for any add-on technologies which work together with web browsers?  Some examples would be coding JavaScript and/or DHTML within web pages, incorporating scriptable plug-ins such as HyperStudio or Macromedia's Director, Authorware or Flash programs, and writing or deploying browser applets in the Java programming language.  These kinds of technologies are generally used to create eye-catching displays on browsers - e.g. math and science activities involving drawing or dragging screen elements, or flashy animated menus.
I was just beginning to investigate Flash and other Macromedia software at my last job. Since then I haven't had the time or materials to experiment.
Is this an area you would like to learn more about? If so, how do you think it might be useful for you?
I would like to learn more about it because I think for smaller schools, school website could become a major source of communication with the community.
Would you like to make use of these kinds of technologies in your 490-I course project? If so, how?
I would, but I am not sure how it all fits in quite yet.

Server-Side Scripting

Do you have any experience with writing computer code for any add-on technologies which work together with web servers? Some examples would be coding for database-browser interaction (possibly using Active Server Pages scripting, ColdFusion, or Filemaker's CDML),or writing or running custom CGI scripts written in Perl or another scripting language.  These kinds of technologies are generally used to facilitate collaboration among users - e.g. via interfaces familiar to CTER users like WebBoards, Blackboard/CourseInfo, our C-Base, interactive papers, etc.
No.
Is this an area you would like to learn more about? If so, how do you think it might be useful for you?
I am interested in web databases and communication tools such as WebBoard and Blackboard. I don't think many K-12 educators are aware of the power of those communication tools. I would like to learn more about how they work, so I could implement those technologies in a K-12 learning situation. I am interested in web based databases due to the my work with the Illinois Virtual High School.
Would you like to make use of these kinds of technologies in your 490-I course project? If so, how?
I would like to make use of the communication pieces as an add on to the educational technology forum I would like to create for schools in my geographic area.

II. Favorite Sites

    1. What are some of your favorite educational websites that employ some kind of advanced functionality (beyond simple HTML)?
    2. What advanced features do these sites have, and what is educationally useful about them for your area and level of teaching?
The URLs you list here will constitute a "starter" set of useful annotated links that the class will add to collaboratively, using a web-enabled database on the CTER server (http://cternt.ed.uiuc.edu/resourcer).
