VISION OF EDUCATION IN 2020

In the year 2020, I believe or should I say hope, that education at the high school level will be quite different than it is now.  Despite the abundance of technology available presently, I don't believe that our school systems are taking advantage of it.  Most high school classrooms are still operated in a very"traditional" manner.
My vision of high school education for the year 2020, is a school setting which can be looked at as a community of learners.  The teacher will act more as a guide in the students' learning and the use of technology will be encouraged.  Computers will be used to help simulate and model real world problem-based situations, which will better prepare students for life.  Working cooperatively, as well, will be something that is advocated. Together, students can help each other learn , and can tackle challenging situations that would be beyond the capacities of the individuals who comprise the group.  The so called disciplines of math, science, english, social studies, etc. will be done away with.  A more integrated approach will be used, so that students can make connections across the curriculum.
I also believe that students will still physically attend high school.  This experience alone is very valuable to the students, as far as learning social skills, etc.  Ideas that we discussed in class, such as super high tech classrooms and home telelearning, would not offer the opportunity to develop these social skills as well as actually being with classmates day in and day out.
In high school education in 2020, I see technology as a tool used to aid the community of learners.  It may be used for inquiry, communication, construction or expression as explained in Bruce and Levin's Taxonomy.  When needed, the technology itself and the instruction on how to use it will be available to all students.
Students learn best if they are interested and motivated to learn. By the year 2020, I hope that education begins to better address the needs of students.  Working cooperatively in real world situations, taking advantage of the technology available, and making connections across the curriculum will not only help students to become better learners, but will also help them to learn how to succeed later in their life.
