Venn Diagrams

Venn diagrams are commonly the main form to represent in mathematics the relationship between sets: unions and intersections. Of course, we can see diagrams exhibiting relationships between more than two sets. But, for the purpose of this tutorial, we will limit them, to only two sets.

Here are how looks the representations of these sets:

Venn Diagram-Union
Venn Diagram-Intersection
A "or" B
A "and" B
Note, that the U represent the universal set and A as well as B, belongs to U. The shaded area illustrates the elements that both sets are sharing.

This representation is set theory was a contribution of the English mathematician John Venn. The main contributions that Venn gave to mathematics were in the fields of mathematical logic, boolean algebra, and so on.
