CuSeeMe

Manufacturers:

White Pine supplies the retail version

Cornell University supplies the freeware version. This is a limited version, but is great for testing the technology. Supports only Grayscale video cameras.

Educational use:

Video conferencing with students in other schools within our district and from around the world. Video conferencing with other students allows students to do collaborative projects. Technology like this encourages students to understand and see students of different cultures. Links to Educational CuSeeMe web sites.

Description:

CU-SeeMe is a videoconferencing program that will run on both Macintosh or Windows computers. The video conferencing software can run on local networks or internets using TCP/IP. With CU-SeeMe, you can videoconference with another site located anywhere in the world. By using "reflector" software, multiple users at different locations can participate in a CU-SeeMe conference, each from his or her own desktop computer.
CU-SeeMe was developed at Cornell University as a freeware and is still available from their site. The retail version from White Pine is call Enhanced CuSeeMe and has many more features. The best enhancement is support for color video cameras.

These requirements are for the retail Version of CuSeeMe from White Pine. CU-seem is available for Windows and Mac OS.

16 megabytes (MB) of RAM (24 MB or more recommended

FileMaker 4.0

Educators can use databases for keeping records. Seeking input from others. Journals, inventory, field trips, lesson plans,student database, portfolios

 

Description:

FileMaker Pro 4.0 is a relational database. As with any database it stores information. At first glance it looks much like ClarisWorks database which makes it easy to use for those who have used ClarisWorks, but it has much more depth and capabilities. It can import Excel spreadsheets and make them a functional database that can be queried for information. It can publish to the web using The Web Companion plug-in. It can be accessed across any intranet or internet. It has built-in support for HTTP and full CGI functionality. The manufacturers web site has many templates that can be used with this database.It supports many different graphic formats including GIF and JPEG. The best feature of this database is its ability to work with both Macintosh and Windows 95 operating systems. Its is fully compatible with Claris Homepage web page software.

QuickTime VR Authoring Studio

Educational use:

Students on any field trip could take photos of their visit and turn them into panoramic virtual field trips. In graphic communications student could learn another aspect of publishing and creating graphics. Students in any science lab could produce 3D fly around images of scientific objects. History classes could visit history museums and photograph artifacts and publish them on the web.

Description of what it does:

QuickTime VR Authoring Studio is a software solution for producing both panorama and object QuickTime VR movies. It includes everything you need to create simple QuickTime VR movies to complex projects containing multiple object and panorama movies. QTVR movies can be embedded in HTML documents and viewed on the web using QuickTime 3.0. It can be viewed on both Mac's and Windows computers. QuickTime VR can produce 360 panoramic photographs of scenes or objects.
