The unit Love - Hate has been developed to supplement my teaching of The Diary of Anne Frank. My name is Patty Chiles. I am a teacher with District 186 in Springfield, Illinois. I teach seventh and eight grade students at an alternative education school.
Every teacher at Douglas School teaches a curriculum known as A.R.T. (Aggression Replacement Training). I also teach literature. It was my goal to create a unit that combined the philosophy of A.R.T. with the teaching of The Diary of Anne Frank. It was also my goal to integrate the use of technology in a meaningful and productive manner.
Please feel free to use any portion of the plans I have completed. I may be reached through e-mail at pchiles@springfield.k12.il.us. I would appreciate hearing from others who have an interest in integrating technology in education.
In the process of completing this unit I visited numerous sites pertaining to Anne Frank and the Holocaust. I would suggest time be given to explore these sites. I would like to thank the Utah State Office of Education for the exceptional site they have developed for educators. The lessons and ideas presented at their site was a valuable contribution to the creation of my own unit. Their site may be reached at http://www.uen.org/utahlink/lp_res/AnneFrank.html
I would also highly recommend that all educators view the Guidelines for Teaching about the Holocaust courtesy of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum before beginning any unit on the Holocaust. You may reach this site at http://www.uen.org/utahlink/lp_res/AnneFrankGuidelines.html
To begin your search of sites I would recommend The Anne Frank Internet Guide created by Whee Ky Ma. It is an excellent listing of sites relating to Anne Frank. Descriptions are given for each site and a star rating system is used. This is an excellent resource! You may reach this site at http://www-th.phys.rug.nl/~ma/annefrank.html
The Love - Hate unit consists of nine lesson plans. The lessons are created to integrate the teachings of aggression replacement training. The unit would take approximately two weeks to complete. Time would be dependent on ability level of the class and your desire for depth of instruction. Students are required to read The Diary of Anne Frank along with the completion of the lessons. The unit is designed for students at the eighth grade level. Students are assessed through a student portfolio. A rubric link is included.

Springfield Public Schools District 186 Learning Standards has the following five goals for the subject area of language arts:
Goal 1 - Read with understanding an fluency.
Goal 2 - Read and understand literature representative of various societies, eras, and ideas.
Goal 3 - Write to communicate for a variety of purposes.
Goal 4 - Listen and speak effectively in a variety of situations.
Goal 5 - Use the language arts to acquire, assess and communicate information.
Each goal given is accompanied with standards to reach the goal. Benchmarks are listed for each standard. I would recommend that educators review the educational goals for the state they are teaching in.
I have created a spreadsheet to indicate the standards reached by my unit. The spreadsheet may be viewed at http://lrs.ed.uiuc.edu/students/chiles1/standards.xls
"People will always follow a good example; be the one to set a good example, then it won't be long before the others follow...How lovely to think that no one need wait a moment, we can start now, start slowly changing the world! How lovely that everyone, great and small, can make their contribution toward introducing justice straightaway...And you can always, always give something, even if it is only kindness!" -
Anne Frank, "Give", March 26, 1944
