PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION

Education is a social and individual investment. I believe that education is a paramount asset from which every country, community, and individual should benefit. Actually, people tend to evaluate "asset" in terms of material benefits (focusing on money, profit, or tangible returns). This is a simplistic accounting measure, incompatible with the purpose of education. By placing emphasis on material advantages, people fail to appreciate the social benefits; therefore they only see education as a mere way to increase one’s household income or only to bring the individual material benefits. In fact, giving kids an education will benefit our society by lowering the crime rate, creating more tolerance within our society, reducing cultural shock, increasing technological exchanges, and last but not least important, more understanding among nations. All these things together lead us to recognize the unquestionable social benefits of education; therefore, we should not hesitate to invest in an education. Based on the intrinsic values associated with education, I consider it to be one of the most important assets in life. Even though the benefits of investing in an education are not immediate and easily tangible, education is primarily the most solemn investment in a society.

From the instructor perspective, I support a participatory type of education, whereby both student and instructor learn to exchange information. Instructors may bring systematic learning techniques into the classroom, but they have to listen to students’ individual needs and learning styles. The classroom environment is an extension of our society; therefore, it should be a place for teamwork, knowledge exchange, and cultural awareness.
