Reflection on
Third Reading

I have to agree
that the role of the teacher is changing.
I think it has to change so we can keep the students interested in
learning. In my role as a computer teacher,
I am lucky because most students have some interest in computers, so they want
to learn or at least do something new.
I do lecture some from the front of the room, but more of my time is
spent wandering around the room assisting those that need help. I may even lecture some from the back of the
room. Most of my lessons allow the
students to work on their own, and I am there to assist if things are not
working. For the role of the teacher to
continue to change and improve, I believe teachers need the backing of
administration and opportunities to help them improve.
As I read through
“The Home School Team,” I thought wouldn’t it be nice. Parents actually working with teachers—not
blaming them if something goes wrong at school. Many times I have seen parents come in and wonder why their
student is doing so bad, of course it is a week before the quarter is
over. It usually is the teacher’s fault
not the student because the teacher doesn’t like the student, doesn’t give the
student the assignment (even though every other student got it done), or
ignores the student. The parents may
not realize or want to listen that their child ignored the assignment, or
didn’t write anything down. Usually at
parent/teacher conferences, I only see the parents of my best students. The parents of the students that could do
better work hardly ever show up. The
students do need some support at home, and hopefully the parents will support
the teacher in his/her efforts to help the students. We do have parents on our technology committee, and they are
invited to participate on the committee.
We have also had parents on our discipline committee when the discipline
policy was reviewed. I think it would
be nice at our school if the teachers and parents worked together for a better
education for everyone. Hopefully we
will begin to provide our parents more access to the school activities by
providing more information on our school’s website, and provide a place where
teachers and parents can send messages back and forth.
Currently, about
the only way I know our school reaches out to the community is to allow the
building to be used by other organizations.
We have allowed a local sorority to make their cheese balls for a
fundraiser, and allowed other non school sports team to use our facilities to
practice. In the past, we have offered
computer classes, and I am interested in providing more if they can be fit into
the schedule. I know any assemblies we
have are open to the public, but we don’t advertise them so the students and
staff are the ones that attend. Next
school year we will have our distance education room up and running so there
will be more opportunities for our students and the community.
