Ushuaia Underwater: Global Warming Illustration
On the right is a photo of Ushuaia, Argentina. Ushuaia (pronounced ooh-swhy-uh) has approximately 40,000 resident and claims the title of "Southern-most City in the World". Technically, there is a town of 5,000 called Porto Williams on the other side of the Beagle Channel which is further south--but who's arguing. Ushuaia serves as the starting point for shipping to and from western Antarctica.
Coastal cities like Ushuaia, New York, Tokyo, and Sydney will suffer massive damage as polar ice caps melt and sea levels rise. Rising sea waters also will affect waterways and low, inland areas such as the Mississippi, Amazon, and Nile river valleys.
To see what will happen to Ushuaia, study the water level in the photo and then select one of the global temperature levels by clicking one of the buttons on the left.
