I graduated from the University of Illinois in
the spring of 1989 with a B.S. in Life Science Education.
In the fall of 1989 I began teaching at Urbana Middle
School as an eighth grade science teacher and Science
Olympiad Coach. Science Olympiad is a wonderful
program that involves students in scientific problem
solving. I have served as the Champaign Regional Science
Olympiad Director since 1994.
I teach on a 7 member interdisciplinary academic team.
The team consists of the following teachers: English,
social studies, math, science, reading/families, LD
resource, and BD resource.
In my teaching experience, I have become very
interested in technology in science education. I have
found that students become very engaged when they are
given the oppurtunity to conduct "real" science in a
hands on environment. Technology and science are tied
together and it it is important to introduce students to
as many technologies as possible.
The National Center
For Supercomputing Applications(NCSA) has provided
many oppurtunities to link current science technologies
to the classroom through web based curricular tools and
activities. Some of these are Chickscope,
RSE,
Biology Workbench, and MapIT!.
My interest in the CTER program is to continue to
develop Web based curriculum and learn how to effectively
incorporate technology into my classroom.
