Check on the planet each day at Earth Alert!  This site explains what is going on around the Earth.  Floods, storms, volcano eruptions, animal problems, fires, etc.  This is a fabulous site that updates daily.  It also includes volcano, hurricane, sun, planet and animal cams.  I've used this site for daily planet reports from my students.  They are required to choose one article and explain it to the class.

Space- Earth-  grades 5th and up

SOHO

Solar and Heliospheric Observatory- This is no satellite- in fact it sits in one spot between the Earth and the Sun so that it can always have a clear view of the star we call the Sun.  It includes a live ultraviolet image updated every 6 to 12 minutes as well as a dopplar imager and a coronameter.  It includes specifics of the Sun's atmoshere.  Also interesting is the SUNBURN cam showing visibility, and ozone and ultraviolet levels.  The Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer- (TOM) shows
Nasa how much ozone there is in different parts of the planet.  It goes on to explain how ozone is measured using Dobson Units.  Very good site!  Links from here include space, animals, dinosaurs, weather, etc.

Latitude- Longitude, elevation, population- 4th and up

How Far Is It?

"This service uses data from the US Census and a supplementary list of cities around the world to find the latitude and
longitude of two places, and then calculates the distance ( this link explains how the calculations are made and gives you an alternative program 'Perl' to use also) between them (as the crow flies). It also provides a map showing the
two places, using the Xerox PARC Map Server."  This is exceptional for locating places on the globe using Latitude and Longitude and calculating distances between cities.  You can type in any city to get the latitude and longitude and get complete driving directions.  Other information provided includes elevation of city and population(currently 1990).

Government 5th and up

House of Representatives- How laws are made, Declaration of Independence-entire document, Constitution- entire document, amendments, enactment of a law.

Current Events-  Grades 4 and up (possibly 3rd -some difficult vocabulary)

Time for Kids Magazine is online-

What a great way to motivate reading and promote awareness of our world.  The kids always love reading their TFK, but if you can't purchase them- have them read it online.  Kids vote on issues and correspond with the editors.  Fun!
