District Policies
Auburn School District #10 requires
each parent, student, teacher, and administrator to read and sign an "Acceptable
Use Policy" before using the internet in the school buildings. Our policy
is much like others I've seen from other districts. In fact it looks
as if it may be a poor copy from another district. It contains issues
like: privileges, network etiquette, identification, security, vandalism
and telephone charges.
Written and unwritten rules
and some strongly urged suggestions for teachers concerning internet use
at the elementary level:
-
students must be carefully monitored
by a teacher while online
-
students are not to stray from
the curriculum by clicking on advertisements
-
students are not to use chats
unless teachers have set them up
-
students are not to use email
unless it is part of the lesson
-
students should use only "child
safe search engines"
-
students names and pictures
are not to be put on the web
Jr. High & High
Schools
Students are not allowed
online without teacher supervision. Students are allowed to use any web
search engine but are monitored closely. Three internet agreements
were pulled in the 1999-2000 school year for misuse. Two students
were using unauthorized chats and one was visiting a pornography site.
Auburn's policies create
a very safe internet environment for the students. It is through very structured
use that students experience the internet. It does, however, limit the
student's:
access to information; problem
solving strategies involving web searches; knowledge of how to effectively
use the internet. Students are not allowed on the teacher computers
in the classrooms without permission.
Miscellaneous Information
Printers were put into each of the elementary classrooms.
The use of ink cartridges is monitored and supplied by the lab instructor.
Software programs are located in the lab and must be checked out for use
in the classroom. A list of this software needs to be posted or copied
for each teacher's use. Most teachers in our building do not know
what programs are available to them.
