Endangered Animal Mysteries

Mystery Endandered Animal #1:
submitted by Terry
My endangered animal is native to North America. There were once over a half million living in the western prairies. Their population stretched
unbroken across the grasslands from southern Canada to northern Mexico. Today there are only a few dozen remaining and this colony is in Texas.

They stand only 60 mm tall and are 500 mm long including the tail. They
weigh 800 to 1200 grams. They have 4 legs with canine feet and run on all
four quickly and low to the ground.

They are nocturnal animals. They lived in the vast prairies and ate meat.
They eat rabbits and other small animals but prairie dogs meat made up over 90% of their diet. They are small and fast, standing on four feet and covered with soft fur, they belong to the Mustelidae family, which includes badgers and otters. They have a strong scent and their fur has distinctive ivory and brown markings.
