Judi says, "ahhh... thanks"

Judi says, "i was curious."

ShellieB says, "Sorry---I blanked there-----long day in the sun."

Judi asks, "I GUESS i saw that on your website?"

PattyC says, "Must have been on the website...I don't think any of us
mentioned it...HA HA""

JimL arrives from nowhere.
Judi waves to Jim

PattyC says, "Hi JimL""

ShellieB waves to JimL

JimL says, "hi Judi"

Judi says, "Our speaker is coming... I just called her.... to make sure
everything was ok"

PattyC says, "I paged you about 4 times in the CTER room...it said you were
there""

Judi says, "it is...."

JimL exclaims, "hi CTER folks!"

ToniG drops Tape_Recorder_6740 (recording).
PattyC says, "JimL...do we have to record this???""

ShellieB asks, "Jim do we need to record this for the webboard?"

Judi says, "I just told everyone we usually start After School Onlines with
introducing our selves..... to each other..... but we'll wait to
do that when Denise (the leader gets here)"

Judi waves at Erik

ToniG says, "Hi, Jim, Missy is here with me.""

Judi says, "and if you all want you could maybe set up a special session
with Erik... He's a great resource"

JimL says, "you don't have to, you can get a copy of the transcript from
Toni (if she's willing)"

Judi says, "I've got a recording going too."

PattyC says, "Do we need a copy for class""

Judi says, "or will in a second."

PattyC says, "When are office hours tomorrow?""

Denise arrives from nowhere.

Judi says, "here's Denise"

Denise waves at everyone

Hulda arrives from nowhere.
Judi drops 7/16/98 Girls... math and science (recording).
ErikW waves

Denise is really happy to see so many people interested in girls and science

Hulda waves Hi to Denise and cast of thousands!

Judi says, "so everyone ready to give a quick intro of themselves? Let's
start with that."

SueB says, "I teach 8th grade special education.""

PamelaV says, "I am the technology coordinator for Urbana Middle School in
Urbana, Illinois"

MicheleLJ says, "I teach first grade and am a student in the Masters CTER
Program at the U of I."

Urbana Il-worked with GEMS Girls in science7engineering last
year""

MeganF says, "I also teach music...violin and viola lessons"

Denise says, "I"

ErikW says, "Erik Wilson is a National Science Foundation fellow at the
University of California, San Francisco who is studying the use
of the internet to support science education. Some of his
colleagues (who are out of town or they might be here today) at
the UCSF Science and Health Education Partnership run a program
of after school science clubs for middle school girls in San
Francisco."

Denise says, "oops"

ToniG says, "I teach 6th grade math and language arts. Missy teaches
Science and Language Arts in 6th grade, too.""

Hulda projects Hulda's Intro.
---------------

I'm Hulda Nystrom, an Associate Educator at TAPPED IN and a technology
resource teacher for the past 7 years in the East Bay and in San Francisco.

In the Spring of 1998 I organized a student online forum on civil rights
involving students from 3 states and facilitators from 2 countries. It is
documented on the Thurgood Marshall High School Web site. There's also a
link to it on the TAPPED IN home page under Resources.

Judi [to Denise]: "most of the people are logging in for their class that
they are taking at University of Illinois"

Denise says, "i'm a computer scientist and one of the things I'm interested
in is getting more women interested in pursuing math and
science careers"

Judi says, "it's called curriculum, technology and education reform"

Judi asks, "did I get that right?"

MeganF nods

Judi puts Denise in Charge.

JimL says, "the online masters program is CTER, and I'm teaching one of the
8 classes they're taking"

Judi says, "thanks for the clarification Jim"

Denise says, "we are developing a student activity called Pathways"

Denise projects Pathways1.

Math self-confidence is a critical filter to science related fields and is
the most influential predictor fo women's SAT scores.

---------------
Denise says, "In addition, research shows that a key issue is girls
perception of how important math is to what they want to do"

Denise says, "this is why we are also focusing on careers information
within Pathways"

Denise says, "BTW, if I am going too fast, just give a holler"

Denise asks, "is the speed OK?"

MeganF nods

ShellieB nods

JimL asks, "do you have a web site for Pathways?"

ErikW nods

Denise says, "not yet, right now Pathways is located in the SAC in TappedIn"

Judi says, "I'll get the URL for math science network...."

Hulda . o O ( SAC = Student Activities Ctr )
Denise [to Judi]: "thanks!"

Judi says, "we can show you Pathways later... or tell you how to get
there....."

Denise says, "we also have information on well known women scientists and
mathematicians in Pathways"

Denise says, "we want Pathways to be an environment for girls to meet other
girls and women scientists in real-time"

Denise projects Pathways4.
---------------
This study has generated some controversy though. Now we wonder if girls
aren't losing interest in Math because they don't see the relevance of it
to the things they want to do in life.

There is a lack of mentors and role models for girls in the fields of
science and math. Girls need to see positive female role models... "doing
it all."

So many stereo types of scientists are that they live holed-up in their
labs.... Girls need to see women scientist with families and "lives."

---------------
Denise projects Pathways5.
---------------
Expanding your Horizons EYH is a conference for girls. Girls (mostly aged
junior high) attend a day long conference to interact with women scientists.

This helps address the problem of a lack of positive female role models.
It also gives girls a chance to learn first hand from actual women
scientists why Math is important.

---------------
Judi . o O ( the controversy was to the numbers you showed us before..... )
Denise says, "EYH is run by Math/Science Network"

Denise projects Pathways6.
---------------
Expanding Your Horizon conferences are one answer, but they only happen
once a year.

So now there is Pathways.
Pathways in an online virtual environment for mentoring and disseminating
information about women scientists and mathematicians.

---------------
MeganF says, "We do this in Springfield (EYH)"

Denise [to Megan]: "cool!"

PattyC says, "Where at Megan""

Denise asks, "do any of you have any insights as to why girls might lose
interest in math and science?"

MeganF says, "At UIS..around March, I think"

Judi says, "we did one on 3/14/98"

Denise says, "that was fun -- San Jose State University in March"

DavidWB arrives from nowhere.
Denise exclaims, "we had the girls make virtual pets in Pathways!"

PattyC says, "Because of the way math is taught!""

KarenJB says, "I think sometimes they think it's cute not to know much.
More feminine"

Judi [to KarenJB]: "how can we get them past that?"

PattyC says, "I think many girls want to know the WHY of math...and do NOT
get told""

Denise says, "that's right, society dictates that it's not sexy or cool to
be a techno wiz or smart in math"

MeganF says, "The girls in all my classes beat the boys (percentage wise)
last year. I encouraged this all year"

KarenJB says, "Not certain. Certainly as teachers we have SOME effect but
not as much as peers"

Judi asks, "do you think letting them see "real women" who are scientists
who have "real lives" will help?"

ShellieB says, "Also a lack of fostering healthy competition in academics."

Denise [to Megan]: "that's great!"

JaniceH says, "We also do Horizons, but last year had 20 girls from each
middle school visit about 50 women in science, math, and
engineering in our community for 5 half days""

PattyC says, "I think girls sometimes process differently than boys..""

Denise [to Janice]: "that sounds great also!"

MicheleLJ says, "I don't see as much of this in primary, actually females
understand concepts quicker here."

PattyC says, "We don't do well addressing that""

Denise [to PattyC]: "in what way?"

KarenJB says, "I certainly see less female enrollment in my Programming
course"

JimL has disconnected.
MeganF says, "I think the gap widens in high school"

PattyC says, "In high school ...I think girls are the ones who want to see
all of the steps""

Denise says, "judi has the url for math/science network"

MeganF says, "I'll find out this fall when I teach at high school"

Denise [to Judi]: "can you project that for us?"

PattyC says, "I use to hate being told...it just is...accept it and let's
move on""

PattyC says, "We reward to much for speed""

MeganF exclaims, "We as teachres should NEVER say, Because I said so,
that's why!"

Judi projects the URL:
http://www.elstad.com/msn.html
KarenJB says, "Patty, I almost never say that, but still lose my girls to
other curricular areas"

Denise [to PattyC]: "I think that's reflected in the computer games that
boys and girls play"

ShellieB asks, "Does EYH address elementary aged girls? What is the focus
age?"

Denise says, "computer games are their first contact with computers and
they are very warlike and violent *and* focus entirely on hand
eye coordination and speed"

MeganF says, "I get EYH brochures for my 7th grade girls"

PattyC says, "I agree with the earlier statement about girls not wanting to
look tooooo smart...what a shame!""

MicheleLJ exclaims, "my little ones like to beat the boys at math races!"

Denise [to ShellieB]: "they focus on 9-18 year olds, but mainly get 9-12
year olds"

KarenJB says, "Also, there's not a lot of feelings in math. I think many
girls like areas where they can be in touch with their
sensitivity"

MeganF says, "We need to MAKE it look okay to be smart"

ToniG says, "I think being a female math teacher is a good role model for
our young girls. I strive to show them it's fun and CAN be
easy!""

Denise says, "we also need to show girls that they can be a scientist *and*
have normal lives"

PattyC says, "I agree Megan!!!!""

MeganF [to ToniG]: "I agree!"

Denise says, "by normal i mean, having a family, traveling, whatever they
want to do"

KarenJB nods

ShellieB says, "That would be starting in 3rd grade. I don't think any of
our teachers have ever heard of EYH."

MicheleLJ nods

Denise says, "yes, female math teachers are key :-)"

MeganF [to Denise]: "It's quite a balancing act"

KarenJB says, "I really think the mindset is in place BEFORE I see them in
high school"

JaniceH says, "Girls don't mind looking smart with girls which makes girls
clubs about science OK""

ToniG says, "Missy says that in science her first activity is to have them
draw what a scientist looks like.""

MeganF [to Karen]: "That's too bad, if their attitude is poor"

PattyC says, "Many of my students are surprised that I LIKE science...""

KarenJB says, "Either they are already good at math and enjoy it or have
written it off completely"

Denise says, "we feel that role models and mentors are really important"

PattyC says, "I didn't even realize I was good at math until college""

SueB says, "Has anyone studied girls who are successful in math and science
to see what attributes they have in common?""

Denise says, "the problem is that not all the potential women mentors are
physically close to all the girls that need to talk to them"

KarenJB says, "Me too Patty. I try to tell them that there is a maturity
that comes later."

MeganF says, "I was "kicked out" of advanced math in eighth grade:("

Denise exclaims, "this is why Pathways is a great idea!"

MicheleLJ says, "I think girls need to be encouraged at home to become
scientists"

DavidWB says, "My 14 year old daughter has been cried numerous times
because she feels like an outcast. She is seen as the smart
one in her class."

KarenJB asks, "Oh, David, what a shame! What do you say?"

Judi nods to Michele

KarenJB asks, "I like Sue's question. What are the traits of successful
girl sci/math types?"

PattyC says, "David....that would make me soooo mad. My boys have always
been attracted to the really smart girls...*S*""

PamelaV says, "I'd like to see an answer to SueB's question."

KarenJB says, "And how do we foster those"

DavidWB says, "I tell her that her intelligence will is not cool to many
kids because they are intimidated by her being so smart."

ToniG says, "Missy and I think they must be confident.""

MeganF says, "I think inquisitiveness (I need spell check!) is a trait that
should be fostered"

KarenJB exclaims, "Is this strange? Many of my best students are
MUSICIANS!"

PattyC says, "True David...she will love college though""

ToniG says, "They should also be naturally curious.""

KevinE says, "I have coached Science Olympiad nine years and always have
predominately female teams and I don't think you can
characterize traits.""

MeganF says, "Math and music go hand in hand...I use it all the time"

PattyC says, "It would really help if people like Cindy Crawford were very
gifted in math or science AND talked about it""

KarenJB says, "I really see it, Megan. Discipline"

MeganF says, "musicians must be disciplined"

DavidWB says, "She has developed this last year to feel good about her
abilities. She is looking forward to High school. She hopes
she will meet other girls like her."

LynnMG has arrived.
MeganF [to KarenJB]: "Are we gonna start that again:)"

PattiWiz has arrived.
PattiWiz waves and sits quietly and listens

LynnMG waves and listens

PattyC says, "I wish people teens thought were cool...they could also see
as SMART""

MeganF [to David]: "I hope she connects with some real intellects in high
school"

MicheleLJ says, "I think we need to start younger than 3rd grade role
models are developed early"

PattyC says, "I think things are changing already...but slowly""

JaniceH says, "For some students it is important to have role models,
mentors show that a career can be done in stages. We had one
that was LPN, child, RN, child, nurse practioner.""

PamelaV says, "It helps to go to a larger high school where there are lots
of "smart" kids"

DavidWB says, "she is also really good at music and this isn't cool either
at her age. Peer pressure is really tough on kids"

MeganF says, "My parents were great role models, a nurse and a physics
teacher. I think it starts at home."

Denise says, "we just submitted a proposal to NSF for funding to run an
career activity in Pathways"

PattyC says, "I think it has improved for females""

SueB says, "I think that really small schools are good too"

Denise says, "we are partnering with Lawrence Hall of Science Equals
program and Math/Science network"

MicheleLJ says, "me too, SueB"

MeganF [to SueB]: "I agree!"

PamelaV says, "Music is really cool at Urbana Middle School, everyone want
to participate, guess it depends on the school"

PattyC says, "The attitude of the family is sooo important""

MeganF asks, "How can we help kids without that family support?"

KarenJB asks, "How will the career activity work?"

KarenJB asks, "Denise?"

MeganF exclaims, "I know, that's a whole different forum!"

Denise smiles

Denise says, "we are postinginformation on a woman scientist"

DavidWB says, "I hope when she goes to St. Joe it will become the cool
thing."

PattyC says, "I came from a family of all sisters...we had women's lib
before it was even talked about. My father always said we
could do anything we wanted in life""

Denise says, "then the students get to ask her questions (via posting)
about her job"

Denise says, "they then try to guess her career -- we'll also post photos"

MeganF exclaims, "That is so neat!!"

Denise says, "at the end of a month of questions, they get to meet the
scientist in Pathways in a real-time chat"

MicheleLJ says, "The experiences that children are exposed to early make a
difference- museums, planetariums, etc..."

PattyC says, "That sounds neat""

Judi says, "when Denise Says Pathways... she means in the Student Activity
Center here in TAPPED IN"

Denise says, "thanks! we hope we get the funding"

Denise says, "judi is helping with us also :)"

Judi says, "just in case any one was confused about it."

Judi smiles

KarenJB asks, "and we just bring our students here to "talk" with the
woman?"

Judi says, "so quickly an advertisement... You can bring your students
online into the SAC .. but not in TAPPED iN"

Judi says, "we have a special procedure for that."

PattyC says, "What is SAC""

Judi says, "student activity center"

MeganF says, "So, we don't use our login for our students"

Hulda shakes her head

Judi says, "and if you are interested in that I can get you the URL"

Hulda . o O ( for student registration )
Judi says, "no don't bring your students on with your logins"

MeganF asks, "Is the special procedure complicated?"

JaniceH says, "I am""

KarenJB says, "yes, please"

ShellieB has disconnected.
MeganF wants it too!

Hulda [to Megan]: "No"

Judi says, "one sec I'll get the URL..... No the spec. procedure is not
complicated"

MeganF says, "Please!!!:)"

MeganF laughs

Judi goes to get the url.

PattyC says, "Is it for girls ONLY""

MeganF says, "Did anyone else get that?..."

PaulS arrives from nowhere.
PattyC says, "My boys would have a fit""

MeganF waves to PaulS

KarenJB exclaims, "Good question, Patty. I think it's important to teach
boys too!!"

PattyC says, "Hi Paul""

PaulS waves to Megan

MeganF exclaims, "My boys were very unhappy with me when I excluded them
from EYH!!"

PaulS exclaims, "Don't let me interrupt. Just passing throught!"

Judi projects the URL:
http://www.tappedin.org/info/students/join.html
PattyC says, "I think we need to quit separating...making it LOOK like
there is a difference""

Hulda [to Patty]: "No, girlsa and boys can use SAC, but with their
teacher's supervision"

MeganF thanks Judi

Denise says, "well i can see why, however, the numbers are there for us to
read -- there are very few women in math and science"

PattyC says, "This part of math is for the girls....this part is for the
boys""

Denise says, "and when you look at higher level positions in academia and
industry, the numbers aren't there - very low percentages"

MeganF [to Denise]: "You're so right!"

KarenJB asks, "Are women less ambitious, more busy with families?"

Denise says, "we've got to hit this issue head on and studies have shown
that when you put boys and girls together, the boys dominate -
whether it's a ocmputer or classroom"

MeganF says, "My sister works at Los Alamos Lab in New Mexico...I use her
as an example"

Denise says, "we need to give girls a chance to see the wonders of science
and sometimes this means excluding the boys"

DavidWB says, "I have found girls are tahe ones who excel and boys act like
the boss."

PattyC says, "What do you think the answer is Denise...?""

MeganF rolls a drum

PattyC says, "All girl schools?""

PamelaV says, "I don't find that the boys dominate in the computer lab
unless they are playing games the girls aren't interested in"

Denise says, "i don't think women are less ambitious, it's a matter of
different styles"

KarenJB says, "That seems right"

PattyC says, "Maybe women sometimes see the more important things in life""

Denise says, "unfortunately for western science, the male style dominates"

KarenJB says, "But men interpret our less aggressive style as less
knowledgeable sometimes"

KevinE says, "I don't think you have to go to all girl schools, I always
try to create all girl lab groups in my class when possible"

MeganF says, "I think we just need to be aware of this trend and foster
their interest"

Denise says, "i argue for a more balanced approach"

Denise [to Kevin]: "that's a good idea"

KevinE asks, "what do you mean by a more balanced approach Denise?"

KarenJB says, "that's cool, Kevin"

PattyC says, "As a woman...for me family will always come before
career...my personal choice""

Denise says, "this effect (we call it the pipeline effect) of girls and
women dropping out of science goes through all ages"

Denise says, "however, it starts early"

MicheleLJ asks, "How early???"

PaulS discretely leaves the room

PaulS goes home.
PattyC says, "What do they give for their reasons for dropping out?""

Denise [to MicheleLJ]: "that's hard to say, we are focusing on 9-12 year
olds - however, it may even start earlier"

PattyC says, "Family?""

KarenJB says, "I think boys are often less afraid to be wrong. Girls are
used to doing well, and drop math if it gets hard"

Denise [to Pattic]: "i think many women want balanced lives which includes
family"

JaniceH says, "I am sitting in my "slower" sister's office- department
chair of a university biology department-she just needed
exposure to the right area of science""

Denise [to Pattic]: "i am hoping that as we get more women into science and
math careers, more emphasis will be placed on having
balanced lives"

Denise [to KarenJB]: "that's a very good observation :)"

Judi hopes so too Denise... (more balanced)

KarenJB says, "Thanks"

Denise says, "girls are encouraged from very early ages to be good and
quiet"

Denise says, "while boys are encouraged to rough house and take chances"

KarenJB says, "Many of my girls are great students in every other area.
When math gets tough, they split"

Denise says, "of course these are all generalities and there are always
exceptions"

KarenJB says, "absolutely"

PattyC says, "I have always encouraged my boys to be quiet...they just
didn't listen as well *S*""

MicheleLJ says, "We need to develop students to be more risk takers
period.."

Denise [to MicheleLJ]: "i agree!"

Denise [to MicheleLJ]: "not just students but professionals as well"

KarenJB says, "I think you're right, Michele. Drop the emphasis on
Perfection - grades"

PattyC says, "Teachers need to encourage all types of thinking""

Denise exclaims, "perhaps emphasize learning more? What a concept!"

Denise grins

KarenJB smiles, too

MeganF exclaims, "I think that's why projects are good!"

PattyC says, "Good points""

PattyC says, "Reward participation""

Denise says, "yes, projects are more hands on and also involve
collaboration"

PattyC says, "Not just final outcome""

Denise says, "girls typically enjoy collaborative activities"

LynnMG says, "I belong to a professional organization, AAUW, and in
Springfield they have a special forum at UIS for middle school
girls and the focus is math and science. It is usually well
attended."

PamelaV says, "I had an all girl team win a fourth place prize in
ThinkQuestJR, the all boy"

Hulda . o O ( AAUW? )
Hulda [to Pamela]: "Congrats!"

Denise says, "American Association for University Women"

LynnMG says, "American Association of University Women."

Hulda exclaims, "Thanx!"

PamelaV exclaims, "more...the all boy teams didn't place, hard for them to
swallow!"

Denise smiles

Denise says, "AAUW is an excellent organization"

Judi nods

Denise [to PamelaV]: "4th place, cool!"

KarenJB asks, "I don't have any doubt my girls are capable, but how do we
help them hang in there when the going gets tough?"

Denise says, "i think role models help quite a bit"

Hulda exclaims, "4th place is way cool!"

KarenJB asks, "And not drop math to improve their GPA?"

Denise says, "they can then see themselves as scientists"

PattyC says, "Good point about the GPA""

PamelaV says, "thanks for the conversation"

Denise says, "role models can also crop up in reading texts or reading web
pages"

PamelaV has disconnected.
MeganF exclaims, "Time is flying!"

Denise says, "we have some information in Pathways as web pages"

Judi nods to Megan....

Denise holds up a BIG sign: Do you want to go to Pathways?
LynnMG says, "I've got to go teach a 5:45 piano lesson. Thanks for allowing
me to listen to you interesting conversation."

KevinE says, "It's been stimulating but I have to go-Thanks."

Judi wonders if Denise has any thing she wants to say in the last 10 minutes

Denise says, "thanks for coming Lynn"

MeganF exclaims, "YES!! That was my next question!"

SueB says, "I need to leave. Thanks"

KevinE has disconnected.
KarenJB says, "sure"

Denise says, "thanks Kevin - glad you were here"

Denise says, "by sue"

MicheleLJ exclaims, "Thank you Denise!!"

Hulda . o O ( transcript will be avaiable in this room ... )
SueB has disconnected.
Denise says, "who"

Judi says, "if you want to go to Pathways just hang out here...."

MicheleLJ picks up MJ's Recorder.
Denise asks, "who's left?"

Denise says, "we can go to Pathways for a quick demo"

KarenJB says, "I'm here"

PattyC says, "HI""

JaniceH says, "I appreciate the information about Pathways, but I need to
leave, too.""

MeganF is here

MicheleLJ has disconnected.
Denise says, "ok, glad you could make it Janice"

JaniceH has disconnected.
ErikW is willing to go

MeganF says, "The 4 muskateers"

Denise smiles

MeganF says, "Oops..the 5 muskateers"

LynnMG has disconnected.
KarenJB exclaims, "Let's go there!"

Denise asks, "do you all now how to get to the SAC?"

MeganF says, "disregard"

ToniG says, "Missy and I would love to go with, but have to scoot! Maybe
another time.""

MeganF asks, "is it by the reception?"

Denise says, "bye Toni"

KarenJB asks, "type go SAC?"

Judi says, "Denise will tell you how to get there...."

Denise says, "go out the Reception and then outside to the campus"
