Insects - Little Creatures in a Big World

This CD-ROM includes various insects from around the world including North America. It includes sounds that insects make and tells the user how and why these sounds are made. In addition it has video clips regarding the importance of insects. The CD also compares structure and behavioral adaptations of insects, teaches about the different life cycles, differences between groups of insects, and their ecological and economic significance. The CD also teaches the user skills for searching and collecting insects, and simple use of a taxonomic key for identification.

 

Dissections

This CD-ROM is designed to supplement lab instruction in the classroom. It includes dissections of the frog, earthworm, crayfish, starfish, perch, and grasshopper. It is presented through graphics, QuickTime video clips and sound. It is format includes an introduction, electronic lab manual, and review.

The Tree of Life

This website contains information about phylogenetic relationships and characteristics of organisms, and provides links for biological information available on the Internet. It is a collection of World Wide Web pages that present information about the world's organisms. Each page gives information about a particular group of organisms, such as pictures and descriptions of key characteristics. Organisms currently posted on the site include beetles, jumping spiders, vertebrates, and terrestrial vertebrates.

 

The Biology Place

This website provides teaching and learning resources for both teachers and students. For teachers it provides interactive web activities for students, art and animations to enhance lectures, links to biology related websites, and research news. For students it provides interactive tutorials, animations and quizzes. Cost for access to this site: Students - $10 for a 6 month membership, $17 for a 12 month membership; Teachers - Price ranges from $50 - $135 for one year. There are also options available for a teacher and his/her students or for schools.

 

Gordon's Entomological Home Page

This website has just about everything you want to know about insects. It provides the user with lists to Societies and Suppliers, includes categories for Spiders, Classification, an Ask an Expert link, and a Glossary of entomological terms. In addition there are five other categories to explore. The topics and a description of each are as follows: Introduction: What is a Bug - a background on insects; The Insects Home Page - includes facts about insects (the biggest, smallest,...); Insect Identities - explains taxonomy, provides a key to the insect orders, and includes pictures; Insect Anatomy - gives a description of body parts; Insect Orders - provides a description and picture of each order; and Links - provides links to other entomological sites.
