Part 1: Springfield District #186 Acceptable Use Policy Summary
Use of the Internet in District #186 is to be limited to instruction use only. The system is established and maintained by the District's Instructional Program Leader for Technology and any problems regarding its use should be directed to this person.
Users are not to place copyrighted materials on any systems without the author's or illustrator's prior approval. The district's Internet system is not to be used by any teacher or student for commercial benefit, nor are students, teachers or administrators allowed to publish any type of abusive, obscene or illegal information on district sites. Users are not allowed to vandalize any system in any way. This policy is included in the District Discipline Handbook which teachers are to review with students at the beginning of each school year and which is to be signed by the student and his/her parent to verify their acceptance of the policy.
In addition to this policy Lincoln School has developed an acceptable use policy within our own building. Students are restricted to sites which have been predetermined by the instructor--either those identified on our Lincoln School homepage or those which have been bookmarked. If students violate this policy they will receive the following penalties:
This policy is part of the classroom management plan which is sent home to parents at the beginning of the school and which must also be signed by the parent and the student.
The district is in the process of adding a policy about student pictures on the Internet. While we have a form which goes home to parents concerning student pictures in the media (newspapers, publications and television) it is generally thought that since the Internet has a wider scope and a different policy/form is needed. This need will be addressed before school begins again this fall. We now apply the media form to pictures used on the Internet.
Although the district policy appears broad in its scope, I feel this makes it very inclusive and enforcable. I have been using Internet with my students for several years and have only had two students restricted from computer use for one week each. While the policy is important, I feel teaching students that the Internet is a tool and is a privilege for them to use it at school goes a long way to limit violation of our district policy.
