Science Overview

Science is the anchor subject for this thematic unit. The FOSS science kit that will be utilized during this quarter is called Levers & Pulleys. During this module, students will be learning how simple machines, such as levers and pulleys, make work easier, as described in the District 186 Learning Standards and benchmarks. Students will construct both levers and pulleys to see how these provide an advantage. Toward the end of the quarter, students will be completing a series of stations to research how simple machines were used in ancient times to make work easier. A data collection sheet will be used by students to record information. The majority of these stations are research based; however, one of the stations reinforces skills acquired during the FOSS module.

Upon completion of these stations, students will then compare and contrast the ancient and the modern tools. The research will be incorporated into the culminating project, which will be assessed by an evaluation rubric.
