Proposal for Major Project

Student Created E-Portfolios

Each of the first grade students in my classroom will be creating an electronic portfolio using Microsoft PowerPoint. They will also be introduced to a digital camera and scanner through the creation of their portfolios. Each individual portfolio will contain five template pages and one page that they create their own design. I would also like to incorporate sound into their e-portfolios, but would like to leave this an an option due to the time constraints. This will be an ongoing project for the entire year building up to 8-10 pages. However, these six pages will be completed by November 15th so that the student can present the portfolio to their parents at Parent/Teacher conferences. This will allow me to evaluate the success of this project through student and parents feedback as well as product analysis.

The portfolio will showcase the following items and use the technologies listed:

  • Page 1- Student Center

a. Student picture (digital camera)

b. Baby Picture (scanner)

c. Short Biography of the student

  • Page 2- Page of Interests using clipart

a. Favorite Food d. Favorite Color

b. Favorite Animal e. Favorite Activity

c. Favorite Subject in School

  • Page 3- My Favorite Book (using organizational chart template)

a. Title e. Characters

b. Author f. Problem

c. Illustrator g. Solution

d. Setting

  • Page 4- Showcase of Student Work (using scanner or digital cam)

For example, in Science we study plants and grow "Harry's Hair" using grass seed. They measure the growth and then give Harry a "haircut" when the grass hair gets long. The image will be of Harry and the student with he growth chart captured using a graph.

  • Page 5- Progress Chart

This page will consist of a page that graphs the student's progress in Reading, Language, Math, and Spelling thus far in the school year. For this chart I will use the graphing template.

  • Page 6- On My Own

This page is designed for the student to decide what they would like to put in their portfolio. They can use any of the tools they have seen thus far. They may even know of a tool we haven't used. This is their creation and their idea.

Summary: Pages 1-5 all contain concepts that we learn and study in first grade. I have chosen these in order to show the students a unique way of displaying this information. Creating the portfolios will be exciting for them and challenging for me. (since I am a novice at using some of these tools) I would like to tackle this project in PowerPoint and not in Kidpix. If I get to a point of total confusion and the students aren't interacting like I'd hoped, then I will switch to Kidpix. I am excited about this project and am ready to tackle the obstacles.
