Summary:
A large percentage(80%) of the software listed was purchased by me and not by my district. The district recently put a line item in the budget to support the growing technological needs of our school. However, when starting from scratch it takes a while to build a library of reference tools in which to use. The Middle School and High School in my district operate on a PC platform where the Elementary operates on a Mac platform. This causes some delay in the purchasing of materials and is based on a needs assessment that is then prioritized by the Technology Director. This is the second year that the elementary teachers all had computers in their classrooms. The elementary uses the Grade-Quick program listed above for all record keeping of grades and report card generation, with this tool in mind all of the teachers had to become comfortable with the use of a computer. The majority of the budget was spent on developing a computer lab for the Middle School and the High School since the Elementary had a lab in place. The Elementary Lab is primary used for skill reinforcement and drill practice as well as keyboarding introduction. There is some Internet usage but it is limited to the one computer dial-up line. This summer we are updating the electrical wiring in the elementary and in the fall installing Internet access to all classrooms. We are excited about the possibilitites that this will bring to our students and learning environment. The "two world" aspect of our school makes it difficult to share software and hardware, however not impossible.
