Stack it with Spanish

Philosophy of the Lesson: Young learners will retain more information if it is delivered to them in two formats. The combination of visually seeing a word and auditory hearing the word gives the students a clear understanding of the word and thus easier to retain. The aim of this lesson is for the young learner to remember the Spanish words easier given a concrete example using both visual and auditory means.

Pre lesson Activities: We will have introduced and studied the story A Birthday Basket for Tia by Pat Mora. This story uses many Spanish phrases and words. The first grade students need to have chosen 1-3 words with pictures for pre-drawing activity.

Objectives: First grade students will interact with HS Spanish students to create a hyperstudio stack of Spanish words with coordinating pictures. Each student and counterpart must create one card for this lesson. More than one card may be created during the timeframe given. This lesson can also be done without the help of the HS Students by using the CD-ROM program "Jump Start Spanish" for Kids 3-6 years old. This product is made my Knowledge Adventure, Inc. http://www.jumpstart.com

Materials: Computers, Spanish translation booklets, HyperStudio, Scanned or computer drawn pictures of the preselected objects.

Time: two 40 minute periods

Procedure:

  • Open a new Hyper Studio stack
  • Draw or import the picture of the object
  • Create 2 hide/show text boxes that name the object. One in Spanish and the other in English.
  • Put two invisible buttons on the object. One button will record the HS student pronouncing the object name in Spanish. The other button will record the first grade student pronouncing the object name in English. Use the hide/show new button action to show the Spanish word during the Spanish pronunciation and the English word during the English pronunciation.

Extension Activity: The students will add to their stack each month when we meet with our Spanish counterparts. Another extension activity could include the use of "Jump Start Spanish".

Evaluation of Lesson: The final project will result in an entire stack of English/Spanish words and objects with pronunciation using audio and visual picture cues. The first grade students have created a mini-dictionary for their use. The end product will be one that the HS student and the first grade student will both be proud of.

Other Considerations:

  • There are many skills that will be developed throughout this lesson. The first skill is learning to use Hyper Studio, the second skill is learning the pronunciation of Spanish and English words, and the third skill is learning to communicate with older peers.
  • Communication is very important and the process will be set up ahead of time with the Spanish teacher in order to allow a smooth transition throughout the lesson.
  • Taking into account the varying levels of learner diversity we will carefully match the students. We will take into consideration their weaknesses and the counterparts strengths. The objects may be selected by the teacher for some first graders in order for a simpler translation.

Note to the Reader- In the past after reading our story we have visited the HS Spanish classroom to observe. I thought the development of this activity would enhance the understanding of the story. I think this would be a good lesson for the HS students as well as my first grade students. We have HyperStudio at my school but I have never used it.
