Ridgely Elementary School
ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY

This is just a sample of what our school's AUP might be like. An excellent website for any school or district wanting to develop an AUP is located at http://www.erehwon.com/k12aup/legal_analysis.html.

Students, Parents, Teachers, Staff, or Administrators with district access to the Internet will not be permitted to do any of the following :
  • Using obscene language
  • Violating copyright laws
  • Using another's password
  • Intentionally wasting limited resources
  • Harassing, insulting, or attacking others
  • Damaging computers, systems, or networks
  • Trespassing in another's folders, work, or files
  • Employing the network for commercial purposes
  • Sending / displaying offensive messages or pictures
Violations may result in a loss of access, as well as other disciplinary or legal actions. With the widening use of the Internet here at Ridgely Elementary School, we know that there will be a growing concern about the acceptable use of the Internet in this educational setting. Since there is such a variety of materials accessible through e-mail, on the Internet, and the databases that
students could access, many educational technology resources are suggesting that school districts develop Acceptable Use Policies. Springfield Public School District #186 does have such a policy. Teachers, students and parents must read and sign these forms before the they are given access to the Internet at their school. In addition to this Ridgely Elementary School now has an AUP of our own. This policy has been developed to assist everyone. Our policy and the permission slip forms that
we will be using are attached. We will make sure that each Students, Parents, Teachers, Staff, or Administrators with district access to the Internet has the following on file:

1. A student-signed form of consent to follow district AUP guidelines.

2. A parent-signed form stating awareness of district AUP and releasing the district from responsibility for material that the student may access.

3.A student-parent signed form allowing for the release of student work, photographs, or other needed information to be included in collaborative projects, Web pages, or online publication.

Although having an Acceptable Use Policy in place is helpful, educators and parents alike need to follow a few simple and basic rules regarding Internet access:

Students are responsible for good behavior on school computer networks, just as they are in a classroom or on school property. Communications on the network are public in nature but general school rules for behavior and communications do apply. The network is provided for students to conduct research and communicate with others. Access to network services is given to students who agree to act in a considerate and responsible manner. Access is a privilege - not a right. Access always entails responsibility. Individual users of the district computer networks are responsible for their behavior and parent permission is required. It is mandatory that the users comply with district standards. The district is not responsible for restricting, monitoring, or controlling the communications of individuals utilizing the network although precautions are taken. Users should also not expect that files stored on district servers will always be private.
