Project Name: The Global Grocery List Plus
Project Date: Ongoing
Project Summary: The Global Grocery List is an online project developed by David Warlick, which has been operating for 14 years.
Its web page is at http://www.landmark-project.com/ggl/. It is a list of items including food, gasoline and housing costs that students or classes find in their location of the United States or world. The prices are submitted to the site and may be used by teachers for a variety of lessons in any subject area.
I will have my "students"; my children who are in a central Illinois town of
about 1600 find the prices in Neoga. Children of friends of ours in our
year round town of Bartlett, a suburb of Chicago will collect prices for us
there and e-mail them to us. I plan to add a component to the price list.
For any item that there is more than one brand I will ask that they use math
skills to average 3 prices for that item. All 5 students will make hypotheses about which location in Illinois will be cheaper.
We will total the grocery list from each location to determine this.
My students will submit the prices to the site. Next the children will pick a location in the US, outside of IL,
from the web site where they would like to make a hypothesis about the price differences.
They will use a map and the Internet to find out about each of these locations.
Each child will produce a web page about his or her out of state community.
Another hypothesis will be made about the cost of groceries in the home town compared to the out of state location.
We will use the price results to check their hypothesis.
