Adult Role Models in Education of the Deaf

For many years I have served as the Streamwood High School building liaison with the Chicago Hearing Societyâs Youth Director to arrange for deaf and hard of hearing adults to present to our students. Adults volunteer to come and share the stories of their lives. Students benefit greatly from these visits and are encouraged to ask questions of the speakers. Having the opportunity to see adults who are deaf or hard of hearing, see different signers and question those who have “gone through” what our students are experiencing is so important as many of our students have no adult role models who have hearing losses.
