National Association of the Deaf (Jr. NAD)
Jr. NAD is a school sponsored club/organization that provides social activities for students who are deaf or hard of hearing or who are have a sincere desire to communicate and socialize with students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Monthly after-school activities are planned and supervised. Students will receive permission forms to participate in these activities. Parents are responsible for picking up their student following the activity. Students sometimes arrange car pools or transportation arrangements other than parents that need to be stated on the permission forms. Payment for the activity is the responsibility of the student, although we attempt to keep costs as low as possible and alternate between more costly activities and free ones so as to include the most students possible throughout the year. Monthly activities include such things as video/pizza parties at school, bowling, rock climbing, laser tag, mall outings at Christmas, and sporting events at Streamwood High School.
There
are 2 annual activities that students eagerly await. The first is
the annual volleyball tournament at Waubonsee Community College usually
held in February. We begin practicing in January and meet weekly during
these 2 months. The other is Open Gym Nights at John Hersey High School
held in the fall and spring. John Hersey High School is another program
for deaf and hard of hearing high school students and many other similar
programs are invited for a night of food, games and socialization.
We sometimes receive invitations for Hinsdale South High Schoolâs
Spring Play and other events sponsored by other programs. We do our
best to allow the students to assist in planning the upcoming events
and actively encourage all students to attend the activities. It is
important for our student with special communication needs to have
the opportunity to socialize with their peers outside of the classroom.
Please
call us at 630-213-7671 if you have any questions regarding
Jr. NAD or need to make special arrangements for an activity.
