Technology Projects
I developed the following projects as part of my master’s work at the University of Illinois. These projects either develop my students’ technology skills or they use technology to improve the students’ education at Streamwood High School. Please visit these projects as many will be repeated, and your child may be participating in one or more of them. Each will open in a new window that can be closed to return to this page.
1. The NIA Program Power Point: This presentation was designed to inservice building staff about the hearing loss, our program and the educational ramifications of deafness. This presentation will be updated and used each year for mainstream teachers who receive our students with hearing losses.
2. RUSH or Read Us Streamwood High: This class web page was written and produced by my self contained Junior/Senior English 1-2 in 2000-2001. The students’ work is showcased and many faculty at SHS had the opportunity to respond to the work. Students in my Freshman English class will have the opportunity to work on a similar project.
3. The Global Grocery List Plus: I developed this online project in order to teach students math, geography, critical thinking and technology skills. This project will be used by the Essentials of Algebra 3-4 students this year.
4. Biology Portfolio Assessment: This new assessment tool was designed to teach students to revisit their work and reflect what makes them learn the best. Students selected pieces from their Biology notebooks that they felt signified specific types of learning and wrote reflections on the pieces. Students shared their portfolios with their parents and the parents provided feedback on the learning styles. Students in Physical Science this year will put together portfolios of their work.
5. Math Module 4 and Math Module 10: These lesson plans and worksheets were developed as final projects for Math Teacher Links at the University of Illinois. Their goal is to teach students to use the Geometer Sketchpad software that is available in our computer lab. Students get to manipulate on screen images to greatly improve their learning and understanding of Geometry. These lessons will be used next year by the Practical Geometry class.
6. Math Module 5 and Math Module 11: These lessons and worksheets were also developed as final projects in modules developed to teach the capabilities of graphing calculators and using TI link cables to put screen shots from the calculators on to a computer. Students in Essentials of Algebra 3-4 will be using these calculators and lessons this year.
Technology is and will continue to be such an important part of the students’ lives that I feel it is essential for them to learn technology skills. TTY’s, numeric pagers and computers enable students with hearing losses to communicate with anyone. Using technology in my classrooms allows the students another way to express themselves and to show their abilities.
