There are a number of large-scale research and development projects that have made use of the web to network students, researchers, scientists, and new technological tools. Such projects are often in the sciences, and are often funded by groups from the government or private industry. However, it is also possible to begin a large-scale project by way of the web through a single person's efforts to bring widely distributed participants together around a common goal, as the first exemplar highlights.
