Word Processing
Before word processing was developed there had been a lot of inventions that helped the writers then. It was not until 1964 IBM brought out the MT/ST (Magnetic Tape/Selectric Typewriter), it had features of the "Selectric with a magnetic tape drive. Magnetic tape was the first reusable storage medium for typed information". for the first time people didn't have to retype the whole document and could just edit it without having to delete everything. This invention was the beginning of word processing. Kunde,(1986).word processing was a translation of the German word "Textverabeitung", it was used by engineer Ulrich Steinhilper in the late 1950s, it was used to refer to the act of typing. Then IBM used it to "to describe electronic ways of handling a standard set of office activities -- composing, revising, printing, and filing written documents." Kunde,(1986) Then IBM introduced the Mag Cards where it was used to save documents . Other developments had taken place and it was not until the 1970s that IBM introduced the floppy disk, that was later adopted by the word processing industry. The most important advance in word processing was that they can save from the "hard wired" to software on disks. Word processing is now "one of the most common general applications for personal computers." Kunde,(1986) There were a lot of features included in word processing such feathers are like Word-wrap, Discretionary Hyphenation, Justification, Adjustment, Alignment, Insertion, Over striking, Deletion, Search and Replace ,Copying or Cutting , Boilerplate , Pagination , Page Numbering ,Headers and Footers ,Footnoting Table of Contents and Index Generators, Form Letter Merging and Automatic Spelling Checker and Corrector. There are now more than sixty complete word processing systems on the market, and more than thirty software packages for use with various computers.
So we can see how wide spread word processing is. And how many features it has, but a feature that would be helpful, if developed and I think will be developed into it in the future is turning the text from small letter to capitals, and vice-versa. Just as there is a feature that would transform the text to bold, or italics, or underline, there should be a feature that would transform the whole page to capitals or small letters, this could be done in the year 2003. Word processing is on all computers and has all the features mentioned above. following are sites that you can give you more information about word processing.
