Linda Burke's response to Melissa and Patrick

Response to Melissa Creech

Melissa, I really like your idea of publishing your student's portfolios on the Web.  You have also seemed to carefully think out the steps you need to do.  Adding both audio and video to the portfolios sounds ambitious, but I do not know the level of Web publishing expertise your students already have.  I would have liked to see the URL of your student's newspaper web page.  Do your student's currently post the newspaper on the Web?  Have you thought about timelines?  What components will you need to accomplish this semester so that your student's can use it before Journalism I is over?  I really like the tie- in with the TV broadcast.  What a great experience for your students!

The use of the school's server seems to be a real issue.  It would seem that student work should be posted on the school server, but I don't know what your district's policy is.  You will want to continue this on for subsequent semesters, and would need to have some control.  Any chance of getting help from a department head?

I was an editor of my school newspaper in high school, and my daughter is editor of the her yearbook.   Fell free to contact me with answers to my questions and any further feedback I can give you. ljburke@ameritech.net

Response to Patrick Thorburn

The topic of your project certainly is an important one.  I like the way that you set your goals up front. Covering all the areas of career identification, job searching, and personal budget development seems ambitious.  Each one of these covers a lot of territory.   Will freshman relate to the concept of making job decisions based on the amount of money jobs will pay? Or this unit mainly exploratory at this point? What technology skills do your students bring to this task? How long is this unit in weeks? Will students have sufficient access to computers with Internet connections? Will they work individually or alone? I have lots of questions, but your basic idea is sound. I'll keep watching as you make additions. Fell free to contact me at ljburke@ameritech.net
