As the advancement of technology continues
to explode, the use of technology will become easier and more accessible
to greater numbers of people. At this time, I don't believe that
many schools (particularly K-12 schools) are taking advantage of the many
resources that the Internet and computer technology offers. Hopefully,
this will change in the future.
I believe that computer software and
the Internet can make concepts in education more comprehensible by offering
visual modes of learning. An example of this could be the web sites
shown in class showing weather patterns and plate tectonics animated.
The animation can give the learner an idea of how these processes actually
looked, which would be harder to get across with a textbook or lecture.
Therefore, I believe that we will see a greater use of these web sites
and software in the schools of tomorrow.
Also, in class we discussed the nature
of neighborhood learning centers. I think that this sounds like a
really great idea for the school systems and the learners within, but only
for part of the time. For one, it could save the school system money
as class days would be shorter, or the students would only have to come
into school, say, three days a week instead of five. And, the
students would still get the social interaction with those students in
the learning center with them. However, I don't think that the schools
could switch over completely to a system such as this, because there are
still learning situations where the students need direct interaction with
a teacher. One of these situations could be learning to read where
the teacher will need to listen to a child read so that the teacher can
pick up on any mistakes and difficulties.
My vision for education is that our
education system as we know it today will be modified quite a bit as technology
is used more, but I don't think that schools (as in actual meeting places)
will be omitted. For one, I think that we as a society value social
interaction for our children. Also, in our society much of the work
that is done is done in teams, and schools can teach our children through
cooperative learning, the concept of teamwork. I believe though that
technology will play a very important part in education as resources in
software and on the Internet are improved and more accessible, and teachers
will use them as learning aids, but not as a total replacement for the
teacher.
