In my vision, I discussed several implications of technology
use on education one of these being the effect on the teacher's role.
Upon reviewing other visions, I found that Paula and Tsui-Ju agreed with
me that the teacher will not be replaced by computer instruction.
However, they brought up a few points that I didn't mention, but with which
I agree. Paula said that the teacher will not be replaced, but that
the instruction will not be so much teacher-focused, but will become student-centered
with one-on-one instruction that is self-paced. I don't see how anyone
could argue that that is a bad thing. Tsui-Ju, on the other hand,
stated that the teacher will still be needed for direct interaction, mentoring,
and motivation. I, too included in my vision that for some learning,
like reading, direct interaction would be needed between student and teacher.
However, I agree with Tsui-Ju that teacher's can serve as motivation, even
if it's just the teacher's presence that serves as a prompt for the student
to do the work that is put before him/her.
In addition to the teacher's role,
we all discussed the need for social interactions for our children.
We all believe that children need good social skills in order to be able
to function in future relationships and jobs.
Finally, I appreciate Paula's concern
for teaching children how to effectively, or rather educationally use and
research the resources available on the Web. Also, I believe that
we should closely monitor children's web surfing so that they aren't playing
games all day, visiting sites that are not meant for their eyes, or giving
out critical information that could compromise their safety.
