Activity One

Weather Data Collection Project

We are online with Global Schoolhouse at:

http://www.globalschoolhouse.org/pr/_cfm/GetDetail.cfm?pID=1994

Our science classes have always collected weather data from the newspaper for major cities.  A junior high science class  would like to collect weather data from all over the world to compare with our weather for that day.  We will divide into teams for the analyzing of the data.  Please collect your data on the online spreadsheet located at http://lrs.ed.uiuc.edu/students/lnorman/weather.htm and you can e-mail your copy to  lnorman@pekin.net as an attachment. Our project will allow both the participants and us to collect data globally.  We will post our data every Monday for the previous week for those who would like to use Pekin, Illinois 61554 weather data.  Pekin is located in central Illinois approximately 300 miles south of Chicago and 250 miles north of St. Louis, MO.

Project Summary

Credits

Participants: We invite any student from sixth grade to eighth grade to collect data for us.
Please e-mail the project coordinator with the following information to take part in the project:
Name
School
City, State, Country
Grade Level

Project Level:
Basic

Project Beginning and Ending Dates: We begin on June 21, 2002 our project.
June 21 2002 to June 1, 2003

Age Range:
6th grade-8th grade

Objectives:
Real world science data collection, integrate math through the use of spreadsheets to publish data collection, and scientific study of weather comparison.  Our junior high students will enter the temperature highs, lows, and current temperature for each local on a spreadsheet. Then, they will compare and contrast weather temperature highs, lows, and current temperatures with bar graphs. Your classes may also use the collective data spreadsheet to graph real world data. This project will be used this summer for a course Linda Norman, project coordinator, is taking through the University of Illinois Champaign.

Project Coordinator:
Linda Norman  lnorman@pekin.net
Junior High Learning Center teacher in Pekin School District 108, Pekin, IL 61554, and master's degree student in Cirrocumuli, Technology, and Educational Reform (CTER) at University of Illinois Champaign.

Instructions: Please join our project by e-mailing the coordinator. Then, go to http://lrs.ed.uiuc.edu/students/lnorman/weather.htm to set up your spreadsheet like it the one located there is. E-mail the finished spreadsheet as an attachment to lnorman@pekin.net  A sample of a completed one can be seen at http://lrs.ed.uiuc.edu/students/lnorman/sample.html   When filling in the temperatures, please take the high, low, and a current temperature. We would like you to complete a week, but more is great. Please e-mail it to the project coordinator then at the end of each week. Then, our class will update the collective spreadsheet at http://lrs.ed.uiuc.edu/students/lnorman/conditions.htm

We hope you find it an educational experience.

Please feel free to e-mail Linda Norman with any suggestions to improve this online project. We appreciate your input.
