Investigation of Websites
Margie Adkins

The 2 sites that I'm focusing on are Digital Cultural Heritage Community and Bravenet.   Although I investigated a large number of sites in my search for information on how to create a web enabled database, these were the 2 that I spent the most time with.

1st Site:

a. Site name and URL
Digital Cultural Heritage Community
http://images.library.uiuc.edu/projects/DCHC/search.htm

b. Why did you select this site?
This site is a database of images from the 19th century.  I chose this site in the hopes of finding  more information for my final project.

c. How might the site help you with your major project?
Some of the content of this site may be useful to my students when they are doing their research. The format of the search engine was of interest to me because it showed some features that I might want to include in my site.  One of the features that I found particularly interesting was the way this search engine gave options on the phrasing of the search.  This is something I had not considered doing.  After using it, though, I decided that it might be more involved than necessary for my purposes.

d. What other uses might teachers have for this site?
This site is part of a project to use digital technologies and the Internet to give access to historical information from museums, libraries, and archives in East Central Illinois. The purpose is to make the information readily available to teachers and students.  This site also has links to related sites, curriculun units, and information about conferences and workshops.

e. How did you make use of this site?
Mostly I used this site for ideas on what to include in my final project.

f. What did you learn from your explorations?
One thing I learned is to keep my search engine as simple as possible.  Too many choices would be confusing for my students.

g. To whom would you recommend this site, and for what purposes?
I would recommend this site to anyone with an interest in Illinois history.

2nd Site:

a. Site name and URL
Bravenet Web Services
http://bravenet.com/

b. Why did you select this site?
Becky recommended this site to me as one that might help me in building my website for this project.

c. How might the site help you with your major project?
It gave me information that will be useful when creating my web page.  I also might be able to find free things to download and add to my website.

d. What other uses might teachers have for this site?
This site is more for webmasters than it is for teachers.  The only way teachers could use it is if they are teaching students how to create webpages.

e. How did you make use of this site?
I read through many of the tutorials they have on various aspects of creating web pages.  I joined as a member in case any of the services they offer might be useful for my web site.

f. What did you learn from your explorations?
This site has lots of information on how to create a website and many free things to download including graphics and javascripts .  It also offers free services to members including guestbooks, hit counters, discussion boards, and chat rooms.  Registered members can use these services to enhance the interactivity of their websites.

g. To whom would you recommend this site, and for what purposes?
This is a great site for anyone who is creating web pages.  I would recommend it to all my techie friends.
