| Assessment | Function |
| Observation | By observing students in class, I can tell who is struggling and needs extra help and who does not. |
| Worksheets and other daily assignments | I give graded assignments to evaluate how well a student understands the concept(s) taught that day. These assignments also help me to determine whether or not I need to reteach those concepts. |
| Essays | Periodic essays are assigned as a way to develop and evaluate writing skills. |
| Project checklists and rubrics | I give students checklists or rubrics when assigning projects so that the students will know exactly what I expect them to do with their projects. I then use the same checklists or rubrics when grading the projects to evaluate how well the students' projects met those expectations. |
| Written reports | Some of my major projects include a written report which is graded on content for Social Studies and grammar and mechanics for English. |
| Quizzes and Tests | I give quizzes and tests to evaluate how well students retain the knowledge they have acquired over a given period of time. |
| Standardized Tests | I am required to give my students the Illinois Standards Assessment Test (ISAT) and the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS). These tests are used to determine students growth as compared to district, state, and national averages, and to report progress in student learning to the community. |
