project proposal

I teach two classes of Journalism One at Lake Park High School, Roselle, Illinois and work on technology staff development the rest of my day. This semester I also have a journalism independent study student, Brandon. This student is the news editor for the school paper, which I advise. I would like Brandon to do more than just work on the newspaper during class. Since he is interested in pursuing a career in journalism and is applying to journalism colleges, I would like to showcase his work on the Internet.

I have used traditional portfolios in my other English classes, with success. I would like to create a web portfolio project for my students. This will give my student's work a broader audience and teach them valuable technology and critical thinking skills. Next semester I will have Journalism Two students who will have already completed the introductory Journalism One class. The web portfolio project I develop this semester will be used next semester with those students. They will work on the newspaper and other journalism projects in this hands-on, project-based course.

I would also like to offer this project to other teachers at my school who have independent study students. The webfolio allows students to work on something authentic and create an impressive final project. Too often students focus on the daily tasks, but don't have a chance to look at the big picture and see how they are learning and changing. By compiling their work in the webfolio, with the purpose of publishing for a broader audience, students learn to organize and evaluate their work.

Steps towards completing the webfolio project:

Perfect using the "save as html" feature in Microsoft Word 2000. Once I have mastered this task my students will be able to easily publish their work though Word.

Create a web portfolio template.

Research the how others use student portfolios.

Develop a grading rubric for the webfolio.

Guide my independent study student through the initial webfolio process.

Capture the design of the newspaper for the web. We spend many hours designing the newspaper, but that effort always seems lost on the Internet. I would like the original page design to be visible on the Internet. I can create pdf files by converting our PageMaker 6.5 files into InDesign and exporting as pdf. We just bought one copy of InDesign to test before the paper moves to a different desktop publishing package.
