Ever try to get a donation from Novell? According to the NA, it’s been

fun… Silvercrest was promised the 5.1 server and a ton of security, to replace

the rag-tags and firewalls the NA put into place back in November. The NA has

a number of change orders in process on top of that. They include:

1. We far exceed the 100 meter "limit" at 800 feet and are going to fiber optic between the two main buildings & servers. Being part of the State of Indiana, we have to begin to use People Soft through a T1 to Indianapolis’ servers.

2. We are changing all the wiring terminations from solid-core ceiling drops to patch panels and wall jacks and patch cords.

3. We have been going though bureaucratic hurdles for eight months now, to put a T1 into place.

Everyone has an F drive for his own files and file backups. It’s set up in a scalable

environment. There are still too many users, the NA claims, who save only on their

3.5" disks. He says they tend to use the same disk or disks for years and wonder

when they die. He has tried to explain that this isn't the way to save information

through multiple emails, but the idea hasn't taken hold due to habit and resistance.

Backups are archived twice a week onto 20 GB tape.

Mail is an internal proprietary system tied in with two other packages. Internet

access is public at only one site, the general therapist-teacher office.

Administration has one connection out for mail and upgrades. All connections are

improvised. The phone wiring and patch boards are in need of a major overhaul as

they only carry a maximum of 28 KBPS.
