Opening Schools for the Entire Community

This was a strong topic for our group discussion last week. In theory, the idea of an open school is exciting, and aids the community. However, the reality of costs, scheduling, structure, responsibility, and security may be hurdles that are too difficult for most schools to overcome.

In reading the responses to this video, it would appear that most of our class finds this a great idea, but the realities mentioned above keep recurring in conversation. I am not sure how to respond to this, except that I would like to see a future where all schools were at the center of the community. Whereas churches once offered much of what we are now seeing in special cases, e.g. (Byck) counseling, classes, community activities, so many neighborhoods are without a center. Furthermore, opening the school for all allows for a more open exchange between parents and faculty. The school becomes less of a fearsome building, and more of a welcoming center where all work for the good of the students/parents, etc…

If schools are to be used for community centers, I feel that the neighborhood school must return. Pride in local schools went out with bussing. This could restore some of the lost sense of community.
