Special Needs Students and Computer Activities
Research

This was such an important part of my work, that I spent a large portion of the first semester in CTER (CI335) charting the behaviors of my students during computer time versus regular classroom time. For the present assignment, I would like to give a brief overview of those findings.

My students, with the exception of one extremely autistic child showed vast improvements in behaviors while engaged in computer activities. The incidents of violent or inappropriate outbursts were decreased by as much as 50-80% in most cases. Eye contact, communication skills, vocalizations, and the ability to focus for longer periods of time were remarkable when involved with highly interactive programs.

There are few studies on the use of computers and behavior disorders, but I strongly feel that technology is a breakthrough in bringing success to children who are accustomed to failure.
