Summary of Student Survey Results (View the survey) Based on the survey administered to students, just under 95% of my students have internet access at home. Approximately three quarters of those students accessed the online schedule, primarily to see what material they missed due to an absence. I was pleasantly surprised to see that this feature was used so much. I was even more surprised to see that over 85% of the students used the online notes at least once during the period of the study. Over a third of these students gave "not obtaining all of them in class" as their reason for accessing the notes. A problem I will have to address during future lectures. While a little over half of them listed absences as their reason. The online review session was less popular, only a third of the students attended the sessions. Of those attending, most of them felt that it answered the questions they had and helped them prepare for the test. While participating in the sessions, approximately one third of the students encountered technical difficulties from not being able to log in to being knocked offline. This is another aspect I will need to investigate further. I am not sure of the reason(s) why they were not able to log in. I will be working with our technology coordinator to find a more reliable method than the free service I have been using. Overall, the students comments regarding the use of online communication are going to be of greatest use to me. Many indicated that the use of technology has helped them during the course of the study. Were also quite a few students that requested the online sessions be held at a later time, and for a longer period. This is the major problem I had with the online review sessions.. when can most of my students make the session, and when is it not a major intrusion on my time. One possible solution is the use of an asynchronous format like "WebBoard" for posting questions and answers through out the chapter. Other comments asked for example problems and solutions to be posted, and links to other sites that may help review concepts. I do have a few links to other physics sites on the "link" page, but I never got around to telling the students what was there. In summary, the students used and appreciated the availability of online communication with the teacher. I like the opportunity to communicate and assist students in a environment other than the traditional classroom. The online schedule and notes eliminate a lot of the "late" work that students have, and the need for me to make sure students received a copy of the notes they missed. I am going to try to find a more reliable and productive way to hold the online review sessions. Hopefully a way that is more convenient for the students and for myself. |
