Rationale for Section I
This principle concerns the quality of life of all, including students and educators. This principle supports not only fundamental human rights and respects the diversity of all cultures, but it strives to promote ethical technology training and uses that protects fundamental human rights and respect of diversity of all cultures. With the existence of unethical utilization of technology in society, it is important for professional educators to contribute to society in ways that minimize the negative effects of unethical technology use. Educational professionals need to adhere to ethical principles and guidelines, whenever possible, in order to ensure that the lessons and technology they develop and implement will model positive affects on society, will promote human well being, and be utilized in ethical ways.
With the infusion of technology rapidly advancing and having a profound affect on education, the workplace, and on the quality of life, it is important for students and educators to develop life-long skills in utilizing and maintaining ethical technology and critical thinking skills. Professional educators and students will be constantly subjected to rapidly changing technologies and will need to have skills for integrating their use and will need to have skills for how to make decisions regarding ethical use. Technologies have been unethically utilized to commit crimes such as theft, fraud, threats, and murders, which have negative affects on society and human well being. It is, therefore, very important for professional educators to model for and instill into students and colleagues, ethical technology utilization.
Educators and students will be bombarded with an ever-increasing accessibility of digitized information. Vast amounts of information have been digitized and are now available with the use of technology. However, while the digitized information can provide wonderful resources for professional educators and students, since there are no rules as to what information can be digitized and made available through technology, much of the information should be subject to careful scrutiny for validity of information warranting critical thinking and information processing skills. Through the efforts of professional educators, students and others, educators can learn the value of critical thinking and help to reduce the amount of or be taught not to contribute to the amount of invalid information available through technology.
While technologies can contribute to the good of society and human well being, there have been numerous public examples of unethical use having unfavorable effects on society and human well being. Therefore, proper operation, support, understanding, and integrity of technologies and information processing are regarded as being important and sometimes suspect. Through the efforts of professional educators, the educators can help to instill in students and colleagues critical skills needed for ethical information processing and ethical technology utilization that will contribute to society and human well being.
