Rationale for Section II

Consequentialists operate on a single principle that we should do what brings happiness to the most people. Generally, that means that we will avoid doing harm to them, which, in turn causes sadness. Harm means negative consequences or hurt. Does that mean that everyone will always be happy? No. Sometimes people want to do activities that are harmful to other people and when they are stopped, they are not very happy. Respect for other people tells us that we should not do things that are intended to harm. Students have a right to a safe environment where they are encouraged to learn. The environment should be physically safe. We should use reasonable care to ensure that students are not hurt due to problems with machinery, software, or alteration of their files, which might harm their reputation or employment. Sometimes in the course of assigned duties and proper use of equipment, unintentional harm occurs. The professionals should accept responsibility for it and ensure that it won't occur again. Learners and educators need to feel safe to enhance learning.
